📘 Introduction: Interrogative Sentences

Interrogative Sentences (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य) दो प्रकार के होते हैं: Yes/No Questions (जिनका उत्तर हाँ/नहीं में होता है) और Wh-Questions (जो What, Where, When, Why, Who, Whom, Whose, How से शुरू होते हैं)। Direct से Indirect में बदलते समय इनके विशेष नियम होते हैं।

📌 Golden Rules for Interrogative Sentences

  • 🔹 Reporting Verb ('said to') को asked (या inquired) में बदलें।
  • 🔹 Question Mark (?) हटाकर Full Stop (.) लगाएँ।
  • 🔹 Yes/No Questions → Conjunction 'if' या 'whether' लगाएँ।
  • 🔹 Wh-Questions → Wh-word ही Conjunction बनेगा।
  • 🔹 वाक्य को Assertive (Subject + Verb) में बदलें (प्रश्नवाचक क्रम नहीं)।

📖 Detailed Notes – Rules with 5 Examples Each

1 Rule 1: Yes/No Questions (if/whether)

Direct से Indirect में बदलते समय:

  • Reporting Verb को asked में बदलें।
  • Conjunction के रूप में 'if' या 'whether' का प्रयोग करें।
  • प्रश्नवाचक क्रम को Assertive (Subject + Verb) क्रम में बदलें।
  • अन्य नियम (Tense, Pronoun, Time/Place) लागू होंगे।
📝 5 Examples:
  1. He said to me, "Are you going?" → He asked me if I was going.
  2. She said to him, "Is she coming?" → She asked him if she was coming.
  3. They said, "Will you help us?" → They asked if we would help them.
  4. He said, "Have you finished your work?" → He asked if I had finished my work.
  5. She said, "Can you swim?" → She asked if I could swim.
2 Rule 2: Wh-Questions (wh-word as conjunction)

Direct से Indirect में बदलते समय:

  • Reporting Verb को asked में बदलें।
  • Wh-word (what, where, when, why, who, how, etc.) ही Conjunction बनेगा।
  • प्रश्नवाचक क्रम को Assertive (Subject + Verb) क्रम में बदलें।
  • अन्य नियम (Tense, Pronoun, Time/Place) लागू होंगे।
📝 5 Examples:
  1. He said to me, "Where are you going?" → He asked me where I was going.
  2. She said, "What are you doing?" → She asked what I was doing.
  3. He said, "Why are you late?" → He asked why I was late.
  4. They said, "When will you come?" → They asked when I would come.
  5. She said, "Who is she?" → She asked who she was.
🔄 3 Rule 3: Change in Word Order (Subject+Verb)

Direct Speech (Interrogative) → Indirect Speech (Assertive):

  • Direct में सहायक क्रिया (Helping Verb) Subject से पहले आती है (e.g., "Are you...?")।
  • Indirect में Subject को Helping Verb से पहले रखा जाता है (e.g., "...if I was...")।
  • Wh-Questions में भी Subject + Verb की order होती है (e.g., "...where I was going.")।
📝 5 Examples:
  1. Direct: Is he coming? → Indirect: He asked if he was coming.
  2. Direct: Can you do it? → Indirect: He asked if I could do it.
  3. Direct: Where are you going? → Indirect: He asked where I was going.
  4. Direct: What does he want? → Indirect: She asked what he wanted.
  5. Direct: Why did you come? → Indirect: He asked why I had come.
4 Rule 4: Tense & Pronoun Changes

Interrogative Sentences में भी Tense और Pronoun के नियम वही रहते हैं:

  • Tense: यदि Reporting Verb Past में है → Reported Speech का Tense पीछे (Backshift) होता है (Present→Past, Past→Past Perfect, etc.)।
  • Pronoun: Subject/Object के अनुसार बदलते हैं (SON Rule)।
  • Time/Place: Now→Then, Here→There, etc.
📝 5 Examples:
  1. Direct: He said, "Are you happy now?" → Indirect: He asked if I was happy then.
  2. Direct: She said, "Where do you live here?" → Indirect: She asked where I lived there.
  3. Direct: He said, "Will you come tomorrow?" → Indirect: He asked if I would come the next day.
  4. Direct: They said, "Have you seen this movie?" → Indirect: They asked if I had seen that movie.
  5. Direct: She said, "What are you doing today?" → Indirect: She asked what I was doing that day.
🗑️ 5 Rule 5: Questions with Do/Does/Did

जब Direct Speech में 'Do/Does/Did' सहायक क्रिया हो:

  • Indirect Speech में 'Do/Does/Did' हट जाता है और Verb अपने Tense के अनुसार बदलता है।
  • यदि Reporting Verb Past में है → Present Simple → Past Simple; Past Simple → Past Perfect.
  • Conjunction 'if/whether' (Yes/No) या Wh-word (Wh-Question) का प्रयोग होता है।
📝 5 Examples:
  1. Direct: He said, "Do you like coffee?" → Indirect: He asked if I liked coffee.
  2. Direct: She said, "Does he play cricket?" → Indirect: She asked if he played cricket.
  3. Direct: They said, "Did you go there?" → Indirect: They asked if I had gone there.
  4. Direct: He said, "What do you want?" → Indirect: He asked what I wanted.
  5. Direct: She said, "Where does he live?" → Indirect: She asked where he lived.
