📘 Introduction: Sequence of Tenses
📌 Golden Rule of Sequence of Tenses
- 🔹 यदि Main Clause Present/Future में है → Subordinate Clause किसी भी Tense में हो सकता है (आवश्यकता के अनुसार)।
- 🔹 यदि Main Clause Past में है → Subordinate Clause सामान्यतः Past या Past Perfect में होना चाहिए।
- 🔹 Universal Truth, Habits, Historical Facts → Tense नहीं बदलता (चाहे Main Clause Past में ही क्यों न हो)।
🔍 Important Points
- Main Clause (Principal Clause) – वाक्य का मुख्य भाग जो पूर्ण अर्थ देता है।
- Subordinate Clause (Dependent Clause) – Main Clause पर निर्भर, जो 'that', 'when', 'because', 'if', 'although', आदि से शुरू होता है।
- ये नियम Noun Clauses, Adjective Clauses, और Adverb Clauses – सभी पर लागू होते हैं।
- कुछ अपवाद भी हैं – जैसे Universal Truth, Zero Conditional, Time Clauses में कुछ विशेष नियम लागू होते हैं।
📖 Detailed Notes – Rules with 5 Examples Each
जब Main Clause Present या Future Tense में हो, तो Subordinate Clause किसी भी Tense में हो सकता है – यह पूरी तरह अर्थ पर निर्भर करता है।
- Present + Present: He says that he goes to school.
- Present + Past: He says that he went to school.
- Present + Future: He says that he will go to school.
- Future + Present: He will say that he goes to school.
- Future + Past: He will say that he went to school.
नियम: Subordinate Clause का Tense Main Clause के Tense पर निर्भर नहीं होता – यह वाक्य के अर्थ के अनुसार स्वतंत्र रूप से चुना जाता है।
📝 5 Examples:
- She says that she is happy. (Present + Present)
- He tells me that he was there. (Present + Past)
- I think that she will come tomorrow. (Present + Future)
- They will say that they know the answer. (Future + Present)
- She will tell you that she has finished. (Future + Present Perfect)
जब Main Clause Past Tense में हो, तो Subordinate Clause सामान्यतः Past या Past Perfect में आता है।
- Past + Present (❌ असामान्य): He said that he goes to school. (गलत, जब तक Universal Truth न हो)
- Past + Past: He said that he went to school. (सही)
- Past + Past Perfect: He said that he had gone to school. (सही)
- Past + Past Continuous: He said that he was going to school. (सही)
- Past + Future in the Past: He said that he would go to school. (सही)
नियम: Main Clause Past में होने पर Subordinate Clause का Tense एक कदम पीछे (Backshift) हो जाता है – Present→Past, Present Perfect→Past Perfect, Future→Would, Can→Could, etc.
📝 5 Examples:
- He said that he was happy. (Past + Past)
- She told me that she had finished her work. (Past + Past Perfect)
- I knew that he would come. (Past + Future in Past)
- They thought that she was coming. (Past + Past Continuous)
- He believed that they had been waiting. (Past + Past Perfect Continuous)
यदि Subordinate Clause कोई Universal Truth (सार्वभौमिक सत्य), Habit (आदत), Historical Fact (ऐतिहासिक तथ्य), या Scientific Fact (वैज्ञानिक सत्य) व्यक्त करता है – तो Tense नहीं बदलता, चाहे Main Clause Past में ही क्यों न हो।
- Past + Present (Universal Truth): He said that the sun rises in the east. (सही – Tense नहीं बदला)
- Past + Present (Habit): She said that she walks every morning. (सही – यदि आदत अभी भी जारी है)
- Past + Past (Historical Fact): The teacher said that India got independence in 1947. (सही – Past ही रहेगा)
📝 5 Examples:
- He said that the earth revolves around the sun. (Universal Truth)
- She told me that water boils at 100°C. (Scientific Fact)
- They believed that honesty is the best policy. (Universal Truth)
- He said that he brushes his teeth every day. (Habit)
- The teacher said that World War II ended in 1945. (Historical Fact)
Conditional Sentences (शर्त वाले वाक्य) में 'if' Clause (शर्त) और Main Clause (परिणाम) का Tense आपस में मेल खाता है।
- Zero Conditional: If + Present Simple, Present Simple – If you heat water, it boils. (Universal Truth)
- First Conditional: If + Present Simple, Future (will) – If it rains, I will stay home. (Real/possible)
- Second Conditional: If + Past Simple, Would + V1 – If I had money, I would buy a car. (Unreal/Present)
- Third Conditional: If + Past Perfect, Would have + V3 – If I had studied, I would have passed. (Unreal/Past)
- Mixed Conditional: If + Past Perfect, Would + V1 – If I had studied, I would be a doctor now.
नियम: 'If' Clause का Tense Main Clause के Tense को निर्धारित करता है। ये नियम Sequence of Tenses का महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा हैं।
📝 5 Examples:
- Zero: If you mix red and blue, you get purple.
- First: If she comes, I will tell her.
- Second: If I were you, I would accept the offer.
- Third: If he had driven carefully, he would not have crashed.
- Mixed: If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.
Time Clauses (समय वाले उपवाक्य) – 'when', 'after', 'before', 'as soon as', 'until', 'while', 'as', 'once', 'whenever', 'till' आदि से शुरू होते हैं।
- Future में Time Clause में Present: I will call you when I arrive. (Main Future, Time Clause Present)
- Past में Time Clause में Past: He left after she arrived. (Main Past, Time Clause Past)
- Past में एक के बाद दूसरा (Past Perfect): He left after she had arrived. (Main Past, Time Clause Past Perfect)
- Simultaneous actions (Past Continuous): She was reading while he was cooking.
- Future with 'until': I will wait until you come. (Future + Present)
नियम: Time Clauses में Future Tense की जगह Present Tense का प्रयोग होता है (जब Main Clause Future में हो)। I will go when he comes. (❌ ...when he will come)
📝 5 Examples:
- I will wait until you finish. (Future + Present)
- He left after she had arrived. (Past + Past Perfect)
- She was cooking while he was reading. (Past Continuous + Past Continuous)
- As soon as I reach home, I will call you. (Present + Future)
- We will go before it rains. (Future + Present)
Noun Clauses – 'that', 'if', 'whether', 'what', 'who', 'where', 'when', 'why', 'how' आदि से शुरू होने वाले Clauses जो Noun की तरह काम करते हैं।
- Reported Speech (Backshift): He said that he was tired. (Present→Past)
- Reported Speech (Future→Would): She said that she would come.
- Reported Speech (Present Perfect→Past Perfect): He said that he had finished.
- Reported Speech (Yes/No Question): He asked if I was coming.
- Reported Speech (Wh-Question): She asked where I lived.
नियम: Reported Speech में जब Reporting Verb Past में हो, तो Subordinate Clause का Tense एक कदम पीछे (Backshift) हो जाता है। (यह Rule 2 का ही विस्तार है।)
📝 5 Examples:
- He said that he was happy. (Present→Past)
- She told me that she had finished. (Present Perfect→Past Perfect)
- They said that they would come. (Will→Would)
- He asked if I was coming. (Present Continuous→Past Continuous)
- She asked where I lived. (Present→Past)
- Purpose (उद्देश्य) – so that / in order that: Main Clause + so that + Subordinate Clause (may/might/can/could/will/would)
- Result (परिणाम) – so...that / such...that: Main Clause + so + Adj/Adv + that + Subordinate Clause (result)
- Purpose में 'so that' के बाद May/Might (present purpose) या Could/Would (past purpose) आता है।
- Result में 'so...that' या 'such...that' के बाद Tense Main Clause पर निर्भर करता है।
📝 5 Examples:
- He studied hard so that he could pass. (Purpose – Past)
- She spoke loudly so that everyone could hear her. (Purpose)
- I will go early so that I may get a seat. (Purpose – Present)
- It was so hot that we stayed inside. (Result)
- She is such a kind person that everyone likes her. (Result)
- because, since, as – कारण/वजह बताने वाले Subordinating Conjunctions।
- इन Clauses का Tense Main Clause के Tense पर निर्भर नहीं होता – यह कारण के समय पर निर्भर करता है।
- यदि कारण Present में है → Present Tense; यदि Past में → Past Tense.
📝 5 Examples:
- She stayed home because she was sick. (Past + Past)
- He is happy because he has passed. (Present + Present Perfect)
- Since you are here, let's start. (Present + Present)
- As it was raining, we cancelled the trip. (Past + Past)
- He failed because he did not study. (Past + Past)
- although, though, even though, while, whereas – विरोध/स्वीकार (Concession) दिखाने वाले Conjunctions।
- Subordinate Clause का Tense Main Clause से स्वतंत्र होता है – यह वास्तविक समय/स्थिति पर निर्भर करता है।
- Main Clause Past में हो तो Subordinate Clause भी Past में हो सकता है, लेकिन Universal Truth के नियम यहाँ भी लागू होते हैं।
📝 5 Examples:
- Although he is rich, he is not happy. (Present + Present)
- Though she was tired, she continued working. (Past + Past)
- Even though it was raining, we went out. (Past + Past)
- While I agree with you, I have some doubts. (Present + Present)
- Though he had a good job, he left it. (Past + Past)
- Comparison Clauses – 'as...as', 'than', 'while', 'whereas' – तुलना/अंतर दिखाते हैं।
- Subordinate Clause का Tense Main Clause के Tense पर निर्भर नहीं – यह तुलना की गई चीज़ के समय पर निर्भर करता है।
- अक्सर Subordinate Clause में Verb को छोड़ दिया जाता है (Ellipsis) – She is taller than I (am).
- यदि दोनों Clauses का समय अलग-अलग हो, तो Tense भी अलग-अलग हो सकते हैं।
📝 5 Examples:
- She is as tall as her brother is. (Present + Present)
- He runs faster than I do. (Present + Present)
- She was smarter than I thought. (Past + Past)
- While some people like coffee, others prefer tea. (Present + Present)
